Productivity Research

The BNPC, through the Research and Measurement (R&M) Unit, conducts research on productivity and related areas. Such research is central to understanding productivity leverage points and logjams, with the intention to guide policy decisions.

Research Areas

Research activities are guided by the BNPC Research Charter, which outlines the following as critical areas:  efficiency analysis, inter-industry analysis, value chain analysis, cluster studies, and development of productivity improvement tools.

Current Research Projects

P2000 Toolbox: - As part of ongoing research, a productivity improvement tool that was developed in collaboration with Sintef (a Norwegian Institution) is currently being piloted. On completion of piloting in 2006, the tool is planned to be deployed for wider usage at enterprise level.

Sectoral Performance (NDP5 to NDP8):  This ongoing research is aimed at establishing the underlying issues for the productivity trends observed during the period from 1979/80 to 2002/3. Understanding the underlying issues will help in the quest to raise productivity and the level of Botswana’s competitiveness.

Completed Projects

Phetogo 2000 – the purpose of the project was to undertake an analysis of productivity levels, constraints, and opportunities for improvements in selected sectors of the economy and to mobilise leaders and stakeholders in the national productivity movement and network their institutions.

Productivity and Quality Awareness and Perceptions in Botswana – this project was designed to assess the level of awareness & perceptions of stakeholders, regarding productivity

HIV/AIDS - Crossing Borders to fight HIV/AIDS: this project focused on possible disparities between the anti HIV/AIDS activities in South African companies and their associated Botswana Companies. The aim was to improve the understanding of the context in which these companies operate in the two countries, and the possibilities of synergies that can improve, harmonize and develop HIV/AIDS responses to companies and unions in enterprises across the border. The intention was to take best practises from enterprises in both countries and develop a unified intra-company approach to the pandemic.
